Dame’s a Dork: Weekend In Review

So this morning I am sitting with my coffee at my desk…thinking about the weekend…and realizing…as usual…what a dork I am…and apparently how much I use ellipses.

ANYwhoo…first off, I have told you before that I weep uncontrollably when celebrities die (see here.) Well, I have been really sad since the deaths of both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes. *sniff*

Nothing mockable to say here…but seriously…this is way too sad. I also heard today that Isaac and Bernie had recently worked on a movie together that is due out soon. Samuel L. Jackson is in it too. Can you imagine how sad that movie premiere is going to be? Sheesh.

Alright…I’m all weepy again…moving on.

Another main reason that I am such a dork is how excited and obsessed I get about the Olympics. Friday night was the opening ceremonies, and I loved every minute of it. Did you guys watch? It was seriously the coolest thing ever.

Also, I get completely teary-eyed when the Americans march in the Parade of Nations. There is never a more patriotic moment in my opinion. I feel the same way every time someone gets a gold medal and they play our National Anthem. Which, by the way, if you watched when Michael Phelps won his first gold medal, they completely butchered it. The best part was that the NBC camera man quickly shot to President Bush in the audience who mouthed the words, “Well, alright.”

So basically between the celebrity deaths and the Olympic Games starting, I have been a basket case this weekend. What a dork…

I can commiserate with you on the dorkiness, Dame. I was just stunned to learn that we’d lost both Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes within a day of each other. I am genuinely sad about these deaths. We’ve lost such great talent. I used to love the Bernie Mac show. I loved how he’d look at the camera and command America’s attention. I was quite upset when Hayes left South Park. To me, it hasn’t been the same without Chef. When i come home, I greet my pets with my Chef impersonation: “Hello, children!”

I tend to get all emotional and goosebumpy watching the Olympic stuff, too, and have been known to yell at the TV when my assessment of our competitors’ performance doesn’t match what the judges say. I still get goosebumps just thinking about the 2004 Olympic opening!

I’m sad too by the deaths of Hayes and Mac. And yet, Heath Ledger’s untimely passing is still getting more attention. Why?

I loved Isaac Hayes as Chef! His big, baritone voice singing his inspirational songs to the “children” were my favorite parts of the show! My husband, who is stoic to the point of rivalling Spock, said, “I wonder if Xenu came down in his ship to pick him up!”

I just realized how much Chef on South Park really does look like Hayes.

I had to really try to contain myself from screaming (which I somehow was actually succesful at it) when Jason Lezak sped past the french guy in the last 25m of the relay. That was absolutely incredible.
I always read the news on my phone while on the bus, one night I read that Bernie Mac was in the hospital, a few nights later I read that we was doing well with the treatment and would be released soon, then the next morning when I woke up, he was freaking dead. I didn’t even know what to say.
