An alert and astute mockdocker sent us the link to an article which describes how mad Mark Spitz (the current record holder for most gold medals won at a single Olymics) is about not getting an invite to the festivities in China. Here are a few of his choice quotes:
“I never got invited. You don’t go to the Olympics just to say, I am going to go. Especially because of who I am.”
“I am going to sit there and watch Michael Phelps break my record anonymously? That’s almost demeaning to me. It is not almost — it is. They voted me one of the top five Olympians in all time. Some of them are dead. But they invited the other ones to go to the Olympics, but not me. Yes, I am a bit upset about it.”
“I won seven events. If they had the 50m freestyle back then, which they do now, I probably would have won that too. He’s (Phelps) almost identical to me. He’s a world-record holder in all these events, so he is dominating the events just like I did. He reminds me of myself.”
Now - I’m not going to say I don’t agree with him, because he probably ought to have been invited. But I just think that he could have presented his case by sounding a little more rational and reasonable and not so much like someone just stole his new dolly and knocked him off the teeter totter. I mean, that whole series of quotes could literally just be summed up in one word: Waaah.
I watched the interview with him saying all this. Like you did, I also agreed with what he said but I thought he should have had somebody else make his case because it did sound like whining.
What is up with this hair in the pic on the right? Bangs? Seriously? I mean, it looks like he has a nice, thick head of hair for a man his age, but the bangs combined with the poofy stuff on top is awful! Oh, and he totally should have been invited. (My husband calls his ’stache in the old picture a “dirt squirrel”.)
I agree that he should have been invited, but he did come across kind of cry babyish!
