Winter. I think I hate winter more than almost anyone I know. And the thing about winter in Indiana is that it lasts for approximately 6 months, from November through April. Then, in May, we get about 4 days of spring, followed by five and a half months of summer, and then about a week of autumn. It’s the dumbest weather pattern ever.
Last night, we had about 10 inches of snow dumped on us. And it’s still snowing. I’m a prisoner in my home at the moment, because while I would have absolutely no problem getting in my car and having a go at it to get to work, I have a babysitter and a mother who DO have a problem getting in their cars and having a go at it to get to ME. They’re smarter and saner than I, clearly. And last I checked, it’s considered “bad parenting” to leave your kids at home alone. So trapped in my house I must stay, until such time as the city of Indianapolis decides to get more than one snow plow.
That’s probably an exaggeration. They probably have two snow plows.
You know what else I hate? I am in a neighborhood which has a Homeowner’s Association, and the dues that we pay go towards snow plowing. Except that I live on a dead end street which does NOT get plowed. So I’ve boycotted paying my dues this year, because I think that’s grossly unfair. I can be very self-righteous that way.
In honor of this snow day, I present you what is obviously the worst place to drive in the snow EVER. I have no idea where it is, but am glad I don’t live there. Except if it’s Indy, in which case I do.

That King 5 video is from the Seattle area.
That video below seems to be a freezing rain situation in a hilly city. (And people would have 4 season tires on their cars, totally useless.)
That said, I’ve never seen worse — I’ve been in just as bad — and even though I loooove snow driving, I wouldn’t go out in those conditions. Even with snow tires and ABS. A lot of over-confidence in that video. The first pinball is especially nummy.
Thanks for posting, and good luck with your own cabin fever.
There is no such thing as bad weather – just bad gear.
Seriously, learn to embrace winter. The snow is beautiful. Your kids should be out running and playing in it, building a snowman, etc. It is great to go for a walk when there is white flakes coming down – it’s so quiet and peaceful. (Unless, of course, you live in Seattle, as evidenced by that video.) Sitting there cursing the weather for months on end is no way to live.
@ Sea Otter: crappy bicycling weather, though. Real tough, through and through.
We here are just starting to get what’s finishing up, down in Indiana.
(In case in interests anyone, Intellicast now offers a spiffy click and drag-able weather map. Go to http://www.intellicast.com/National/Radar/Current.aspx?location=default (with some luck) and look for a central, red button with “Pan & Zoom”.)
Want to talk about screwy weather patterns…you should come to Georgia. We keep bouncing from one extreme to the other. 16 degree weather to 70 degree weather on a biweekly schedule. It’s like the state has menopause or something.
That would be the Seattle area, where I live, and we had a couple of serious freak snow storms, and also like 2 snow plows, yeah that was fun!
Try living along the shores of Lake Erie. There is what’s called “Lake Effect” which makes the snowstorms even worse than Nearby areas. (Untill the lake freezes over). At least the snow is safer than the ice.
It looks like they put Crisco down instead of salt.
Im with you. I HATE the cold. i HATE the snow (even tho, yes, it CAN be pretty…from INSIDE) and the worst is to drive in it! YUUCK. this is exactly why i moved out of Illinois. do what i did and relocate to southern California!!
And to think some people watching the cars having trouble or crashing would still try to drive on…
I decided to live in Omaha once and did manage to stay one full year an experience every season. I HATED the snow, terrified me to drive in it and I don’t like being cold so playing in it was not fun either. I was told that was a mild winter no less but if felt horrible. Summer with the humidity was horrible too, I came back to So cal where the weather is much more consistent and will take a few rainy days over that snow crap any day
The way that car was literally pushing all other cars out of the way, it’s as if they had their foot on the gas the whole time. I’ve lived in the NW my whole life and seen some pretty hairy winters – what scares me the most are people like this who don’t know what they’re doing. I wish people would stay home unless they have all the right gear AND have experience driving in snow!
Sorry….drivers like these really get me riled….
That is about what it looked like for me driving to work today! HA!
I am from Indiana, I feel your pain!!
Yes, it’s from Seattle, and their response to this year’s storm was the best ever. They wouldn’t salt the roads to melt the ice, which they rationalized by saying that they didn’t want the salt to pollute Puget Sound. Ponder that for a minute, THEY DIDN’T WANT TO POLLUTE THE OCEAN WITH SALT!
FOR ALL OF YOU WHO DISS WEATHER!!!
Here is a tip for you!!
PLAY VIDEO GAMES AND LEARN MY LANGUAGE

I’m back!! New Albany, Indiana got a lovely 8 inches of snow, which resulted in me losing power for three days. I just got my internet back today!! Oh, how I have missed The Mock Dock. The good part? I now have 4 pages of The Mock Dock to read at once! Usually I have to suffice with checking in constantly and reading one entry at a time as you update. What joy!
