So I want to tell you about a conversation I just had with Mr. Mock. First, the background. I think I’ve mentioned before that I’m CRAZY about Jodi Picoult’s books. If you haven’t heard of her, you’ll probably be hearing about her more once Cameron Diaz’s movie “My Sister’s Keeper” comes out – it’s based on one of Jodi’s books. ANYWAY, my love for Jodi in no way diminishes my love for Laura Zigman, who as you know is a mockdocker and fellow Ashley Judd hater.
Jodi just came out with a new book, pictured above. I’ve been waiting for MONTHS for a new book of hers to come out, because there hasn’t been a single thing she’s written that I haven’t absolutely GOBBLED UP. Since I’ve read everything she’s ever written ever, she simply cannot write new books quickly enough. And true to form, the moment I finished the first page of the new book, I was completely hooked. And that’s the thing about Jodi’s books – I become so completely wrapped up in them that I tear through them in a matter of hours, and then I’m left feeling completely empty and yearning for more and then I have to wait for months for the next one to come out. It’s like an addict waiting for the next high.
So I just finished the first few chapters of the latest book, and then I forced myself to put it down, and the following conversation with Mr. Mock ensued:
Me: OMG – I love Jodi’s books SO MUCH.
Mr. Mock: So you’ve said.
Me: This new one is already so good – I don’t want to stop reading it.
Mr. Mock: Then keep reading it.
Me: But the more I read it, the quicker it’ll be over.
Mr. Mock: Then stop reading it.
Me: I don’t want to stop reading it. It’s just that when a book is this good, I tend to read it really fast and then it ends before I want it to.
Mr. Mock: Then don’t read it so fast.
See? He’s got an answer for everything.
When I’ve gotten that way about any book, that is, that I simply MUST keep reading it, I simply give in and read it through. Then, when I’m done, I start over, this time more slowly and taking my time to pay more attention to things like foreshadowing, location descriptions, etc.
I know — I’m a geek. ;p
I’m the same way about Dean Koontz’s books.
I do that with Nora Roberts
Ooh, ooh, I am so glad to find another Jodi Picoult lover, the first book I ever read of her’s was My Sister’s Keeper and I’ve loved everything I have ever read of her’s since
Can I recomment something to you? Look up Diana Gabaldon, Outlander, start that series, there are 6, you’ll love it!
Obviously I meant recommend! I’ve had too much rum tonight..
I know when I read a Playboy I just can’t put it down. I try but it just sticks to my hands.
I read her books too. And when I finished My Sister’s Keeper, I was at the airport terminal, in line to board, crying like a dork.
Barbara Kingsolver is such a master of language that her words are delicious to my eyes. If you haven’t yet read The Poisonwood Bible, you simply must. Then try Bean Trees, Animal Dreams, Pigs in Heaven… If you start with some of her earlier works, you can see the progression of her talent and craft. Amazing.
The first Jodi Picoult book I ever read was Nineteen Minutes because I saw the review in a magazine and it sounded interesting. I could not put it down. I have also read My Sister’s Keeper, and when I have more time, I have The Pact waiting for me.
Omgosh, R, I LOVED The Bean Trees! I kept telling myself I need to start reading for fun again but I didn’t know what to start with. Now I know…
Dani – Nineteen Minutes and The Pact are actually my two favorites!!!
Ana, you will NOT be sorry! There are only a few of Kingsolver’s works I don’t love obsessively. When you read The Poisonwood Bible, you’ll not even bother to see which character’s voice each chapter is written in because Kingsolver is SO good at character voices that you’ll know within the first two sentences. I can’t wait to hear how you progress with her works!!!!
EW BOB!! haha
next time i buy a book, Im going to pick one of hers up. im a book worm freak, and I have been needing a good author to stick to for a while. thanks for all the good recommendations!
I knew there was a reason I felt we were sistas! I love Jodi too! I finished Handle With Care last night and was crying like a baby! Loved it! I love Willow!
